Westchester Wedding Venues Within Reach of New York City

A brick Georgian mansion with white columns at the end of a long allee of old trees on an estate in early summer, a sloping lawn set with round tables under a white sailcloth tent and a low fieldstone wall in the foreground

Westchester gives New York City couples estates, historic mansions, gardens, country clubs, hotels, ballrooms, waterfront properties, restaurants and farms within reach of Manhattan. Start with three filters: your guest count, the complete price structure and how your guests will get there. Metro-North reaches Westchester stations on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines, but many venues still need a taxi or shuttle from the station. The marriage license is simple: any New York town or city clerk can issue it, it is valid statewide, and outside New York City it costs $40, has a 24-hour waiting period and stays valid for 60 days.

Key takeaways

Tap a card to bring it forward.

  • Filter first by guest count, the complete price structure and guest transportation, then by style.
  • A Metro-North station near a venue does not make it walkable; plan the last mile by taxi, rideshare or shuttle.
  • A published starting price or capacity is a starting point; ask for a dated proposal with every fee.
  • A New York State license from any town or city clerk works statewide: $40 outside NYC, 24-hour wait, valid 60 days.
  • Public parks have their own permit rules, set by the county, city, village or state office that runs the site.
  • Ask each hotel for current room-block rates, cutoff dates and cancellation terms.

Is Westchester practical for a New York City guest list?

For most couples, yes, as long as you plan the trip as carefully as the venue. Trains from Grand Central take about 25 to 60 minutes depending on the station, and the county has enough variety that you can pick a setting by type rather than settling for whatever is nearby. The catch is the last stretch: many properties sit a drive from the station, so your guests' day depends on a shuttle or a taxi as much as on the train.

The legal side is easy to handle. You do not need a New York City license for a Westchester ceremony; a New York State license from a Westchester clerk works. If you are still comparing regions and want more distance from the city, read our guide to Hudson Valley wedding venues.

Which type of venue fits your wedding?

Westchester venues fall into a few types, and the type tells you more about your wedding than the name does.

A woman and a man, both with dark brown skin, in everyday clothes walk up a gravel drive between two old stone gate pillars toward a white-columned country club clubhouse, with mown lawns and big oaks on either side in soft overcast light
  • Estates and historic mansions suit couples who want ceremony, photos and reception on one property. Tarrytown House Estate, for example, hosts up to 300 guests, and Lyndhurst is another historic setting listed by Visit Westchester.
  • Country clubs offer polished ballrooms and grounds, but they are not open to everyone. Westchester Country Club in Rye states that events require membership or sponsorship by a member.
  • Gardens and arts settings give you an outdoor ceremony with a beautiful backdrop. Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers and Caramoor Center are examples.
  • Waterfront venues put the Hudson River or the Long Island Sound in your photos. Windrose on Hudson is one example.
  • Hotels and ballrooms are the practical choice for large guest lists, since the rooms, parking and catering are in one place. Westchester Marriott, The Opus Westchester, Sleepy Hollow Hotel and Sonesta White Plains Downtown are examples.
  • Restaurants, inns, barns and farms work for smaller or more casual weddings. Kittle House is one example.

These venues are examples of each type, so use them as a starting list for tours.

Which venues publish capacities and prices?

Some venues post numbers; many ask you to request a proposal. Here is what the venue-owned pages showed on October 9, 2026. Prices and minimums change, so treat each row as a starting point and confirm for your date.

A few notes make those numbers more useful. Capacity depends on the room setup, so a ballroom that seats 650 with a dance floor holds fewer if you add a large band or a different meal format. Sleepy Hollow also lists staffing fees of $3,500 for Sundays and Thursdays and $5,500 for legal holidays, plus $1,000 for the dishwasher and soap, so its $45 per guest is not the whole bill. At Untermyer, the ceremony-only package gives you 2.5 hours for setup, ceremony, photographs and cleanup, allows live musicians, and does not allow amplified music, food or drinks; the private wedding package permits a tent, amplified music, dancing and catering.

How do your guests get there?

Most of your city guests will arrive on Metro-North from Grand Central. The approximate times below are for planning; check the current Metro-North schedule for your date, since times change by train, express pattern and weekend work.

The train is only part of the trip. Ask each venue whether it runs a shuttle from the station, how late the last shuttle leaves and where taxis wait. If guests drive, traffic varies a lot by day and hour. Rome2Rio lists about 24.5 miles and roughly 53 minutes by car from Grand Central to Tarrytown and about 17.8 miles and 26 minutes to New Rochelle, and Westchester County data lists a shortest peak travel time of 31 minutes for White Plains. For other towns, check the route in a map service for your wedding date and arrival time, and ask the venue about parking and whether it is free or paid.

Where do you get the New York marriage license for a Westchester wedding?

Apply in person at any New York town or city clerk. The New York State Department of Health says the license costs $40 outside New York City, the ceremony cannot happen until 24 hours after it is issued, and it stays valid for 60 calendar days, beginning the day after issuance. Both of you must appear together, and a New York State license is valid statewide. A license for a wedding in Connecticut or New Jersey has to come from that state.

Westchester examples include the Yonkers City Clerk, the New Rochelle City Clerk, the White Plains City Clerk and the Town of New Castle Clerk, each listing a $40 fee. The Village of Tarrytown says its village clerk does not issue marriage licenses and directs applicants to Greenburgh, so a Tarrytown-area couple should apply there. The Westchester County Clerk lists other town, city and village clerks.

Bring photo identification and certified birth certificates, plus certified divorce or death records if either of you was married before. Appointment systems and requirements vary by clerk, so check before you go. For the New York City process, see the NYC marriage license, step by step.

Do public parks need ceremony permits?

Often yes, and the office that decides depends on who owns the park. Westchester County Parks says wedding photography in county parks requires permit information from the Parks Department at 914-231-4575, and managed facilities may have separate requirements. The Village of Mamaroneck says organized events generally need a permit and sends applicants to Parks and Recreation. Kingsland Point Park is county-owned and managed by Sleepy Hollow, and the village rents the Kathryn W. Davis Pavilion for weddings and special events. In Yonkers, Untermyer Gardens sells its own packages, listed above.

Fees, insurance, hours and sound rules differ by park, so confirm each one with the office that runs the site before you announce a date.

Where should guests stay, and how do room blocks work?

A room block holds a set of rooms at a negotiated rate. Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown offers room blocks with exclusive rates for 10 or more rooms. Tarrytown House Estate offers social and wedding room blocks with on-site lodging. Sleepy Hollow Hotel lists wedding lodging with its wedding packages.

Hotels in Tarrytown, White Plains, Rye, New Rochelle and Yonkers are other common choices. Ask each hotel for current group rates, and write down the date, room type, cutoff date, attrition terms and cancellation terms. For city hotels before or after the wedding, see where wedding guests should stay in NYC.

What changes the total price, and what should you ask before booking?

The number on a venue page is rarely the number on your final invoice. Taxes, service charges, staffing, bar, rentals, ceremony fees, guest minimums, gratuity and overtime can all sit outside a starting price. Sleepy Hollow's list of kitchen, staffing and overtime fees shows how quickly a per-guest price grows, and Westchester Country Club's Saturday minimum shows how date and guest count shape the total.

Ask every venue for a dated proposal that answers these questions:

  • What is included in the quoted price, and is the quote current for your date?
  • Are service charge, tax, gratuity and staffing fees included?
  • What are the deposit, payment schedule and cancellation terms?
  • How many hours are included, and what does overtime cost?
  • Are setup and breakdown hours included?
  • Is the venue exclusive about catering, and can you bring outside vendors?
  • Who provides tables, chairs, linens, lighting and sound?
  • What is the rain plan, when is it decided, and does the indoor space hold your full guest count?
  • Are there noise limits or an end time?
  • Is the space accessible for guests who use mobility devices?
  • How do guests get from the station, and how late does the shuttle run?
  • Do Friday, Sunday or off-season dates cost less?

Availability, minimums and seasonal pricing change by year, so ask each venue for its current openings and the earliest date it will hold.

Questions about Westchester weddings

Can a New York City marriage license be used in Westchester?

A New York State license works anywhere in the state, so you do not need a New York City license for a Westchester ceremony. Apply with any town or city clerk, and remember the 24-hour wait and 60-day validity.

Do country clubs accept every inquiry?

Not necessarily. Westchester Country Club states that an event requires membership or sponsorship by a member, so ask about access before you fall for the grounds.

Does every venue publish a price?

No. Some list prices or minimums, while others list capacities and ask you to request a proposal. Ask for a dated quote that spells out every fee.

Does an outdoor venue need a rain plan?

Yes. Untermyer Gardens, for example, lists an indoor option at the Cola Center for its ceremony-only package if it is available. Confirm the indoor space, the decision deadline, the capacity and any added fee.

Your next step

Pick two or three venue types that fit your guest count, then ask each for a dated proposal and its shuttle plan. When you have a front-runner, book the clerk visit so your license falls inside the 60-day window before the ceremony.
