Getting there

  • The Staten Island Ferry is free, runs every day of the year and takes about 25 minutes between Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and St. George Terminal, 1 Bay Street (NYC DOT ferry schedule)
  • The Staten Island Railway runs 24 hours a day between St. George and Tottenville (MTA timetable, effective November 2, 2025)
  • Local buses fan out from the ferry; the S79 Select Bus runs to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and SIM express buses go to Manhattan (MTA Staten Island bus map)
  • There is no passenger airport on Staten Island; guests fly into Newark, JFK or LaGuardia

What marrying on Staten Island is like

Getting here is part of the day. The ferry crosses the harbor from Lower Manhattan to St. George in about 25 minutes and costs nothing, and the City Clerk office is in the Borough Hall Building on Richmond Terrace, on the North Shore. A small wedding can start with the whole party on the boat, and the same ferry takes everyone back afterward.

For a larger day, the island's venues are spread from the North Shore to the South Shore. Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden in New Brighton is an 83-acre campus of gardens, historic buildings and event spaces that hosts weddings and catered events. Historic Richmond Town sits in the middle of the island, about 15 minutes by car from the bridges, 30 to 45 minutes from the ferry on the S74 bus, and about 90 minutes from Midtown by transit, with free parking.

Where couples say it

Snug Harbor hosts weddings with on-site catering, and the Staten Island Museum rents event space on the same campus. In Tottenville, the historic grounds of Conference House Park make a setting for photos; ask the Conference House Association about ceremonies. For any NYC park, a NYC Parks Special Event Permit is required once you have more than 20 people, and can make sense for smaller groups that want to reserve a spot or use sound (checked September 2026).

Ask the venue what it includes before you hire separately. For a photographer, DJ, officiant, florist or hair and makeup artist, ask about your date, their service area, the total and their insurance.
