What cookies and local storage are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep, so the site, or a service it uses, can recognize your browser later. Local storage is a similar space in your browser where a site can keep a setting; it stays on your device and is not sent to a server with each request. This policy treats both the same way.
"First party" items are set by getmarriedinnyc.com itself. "Third party" items are set by another company's service, here Google or Microsoft, and only if you allow it.
The two kinds the site uses
Strictly necessary. These remember choices you make on the site: your cookie answer and your light or dark theme. They stay in your browser, are never sent to us and do not track you. The site sets each one only when you make the choice it records.
Analytics. These come from Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity and show which pages help and where the site is hard to use. They stay off until you choose Accept in the cookie banner. If you choose Reject, ignore the banner, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, none of them is set.
The site uses no advertising or marketing cookies, and no ad network places cookies on getmarriedinnyc.com.

Our web host, Netlify, delivers the site and sets no cookies on your visit as part of normal page delivery.

Cookies set on other websites
Some links go to other websites, and those sites set their own cookies when you arrive there.
- Stores we link to, such as Amazon. When you follow an affiliate link, the store sets its own cookies on its own site so it can credit Get Married in NYC with a commission if you buy. Those cookies fall under the store's own cookie and privacy policies. The affiliate disclosure explains how these links work.
- Official offices and vendors. If you follow a link to the City Clerk, another government office or a vendor's website, that site's cookie policy applies.
Pages on getmarriedinnyc.com load no social media buttons, embedded maps, videos or other third party widgets that would set cookies before you click anything.
How to change your choice
Choose Cookie settings at the bottom of any page to open the cookie choices again, then accept or reject analytics.
- If you switch analytics off, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity stop sending data right away, the site removes the first party _ga, _clck and _clsk cookies it can reach, and the tools no longer load from your next page view. Cookies set on Microsoft's own domains stay until they expire or you delete them in your browser.
- If you switch analytics on, the tools load straight away.
Global Privacy Control
If your browser or a browser extension sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the site treats it as a refusal of analytics. The analytics tools do not load and their cookies are not set, whatever was chosen before. The signal also counts as a request to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information under the US state laws that recognize it. The privacy policy has more.

Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies and site data, usually under Privacy or Security:

- Safari: Settings (or Preferences), Privacy, Manage Website Data.
- Firefox: Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies and Site Data.
- Edge: Settings, Cookies and site permissions.
- Phones: in the settings of the browser app you use.
Blocking cookies and site data leaves getmarriedinnyc.com working. The site will ask your cookie question again, and forget your theme, on your next visit. Google also offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on every site, at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Changes to this policy
If a cookie or similar item is added, removed or changed, this policy and the date at the top are updated before the change goes live. If a new item needs your consent, the banner asks for it before it is set.
