A Wedding in New York City on a Budget

A woman in a champagne jumpsuit and a man in a navy suit, both with deep brown skin, laughing side by side on subway car bench seats, a small bouquet in a lap and a few commuters blurred behind

A legal NYC marriage can start with a $35 marriage license and a $25 City Clerk ceremony, and a first domestic-use marriage record costs $15, all listed on the City Clerk's fee page. Nearly everything else you spend goes to the celebration: venue, food and drink, photography, attire, flowers, rentals, tax, gratuity and getting people from place to place. The biggest savings usually come from fewer guests, a weekday or daytime event, a restaurant or bring-your-own space, and shorter vendor coverage. Confirm every current fee and package with the City Clerk, the agency or the business before you pay a deposit.

Key takeaways

Tap a card to bring it forward.

  • The legal minimum is $60 for the license and City Clerk ceremony, or $75 with one first domestic-use marriage record.
  • The celebration, not the paperwork, is where the budget goes.
  • Guest count is the strongest lever, because food, seating, rentals and venue minimums often scale by person.
  • A park event with more than 20 attendees needs a permit, and the processing fee is $25.
  • Ask every venue and vendor for the final total after tax, gratuity, service charges and overtime.
  • Build your budget from written quotes before you pay any deposit.

What a budget wedding includes

A City Clerk ceremony is a legal event, not a reception. You can marry there and celebrate somewhere else, which is why the legal cost and the celebration cost are two separate budgets.

The celebration side is made of these lines:

  • Venue, or a restaurant room
  • Food and drink
  • Photography
  • Attire
  • Flowers
  • Rentals such as tables, chairs, linens, glassware, sound and lighting
  • Sales tax and gratuity
  • Transportation and parking, including rides for guests

Music, cake, hair and makeup, invitations and a permit may also belong on your list, depending on the plan. Write each one down as its own line, with a real quote beside it, so nothing hides inside a package price.

What NYC weddings cost overall

National survey numbers give you a sense of scale, but they are not New York City quotes, and a budget wedding sits far below them. The Knot's 2025 Real Weddings Study surveyed 16,956 U.S. couples married in 2024 and reported a $33,000 national average. It put venues at about $8,000 for venue-only and about $22,000 for a venue that includes catering, alcohol and rentals.

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, published February 18, 2026, surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. couples married in 2025. It reported a $34,000 average, 117 guests, $292 per guest and 13 wedding professionals. It also reported that 85% of couples said the economy affected their planning and 37% contacted more vendors to find options that fit their budget.

Venue, food and drink are the largest planning categories in both surveys. For the rest, such as photography, attire, flowers, music and transportation, price each line from a vendor quote rather than a rule of thumb.

Which choices save the most

Guest count comes first. Food, drink, seating and rentals usually scale by person, and many venues set a minimum number of guests or a minimum spend, so a smaller list helps most when the venue's terms allow it.

Venue type is next. A bring-your-own space, a restaurant or a flat-rate room can cost very differently from a hall that sells an all-inclusive package. Compare the complete package, not the headline number.

Date and meal period come after that. Some businesses publish lower prices for weekdays and for daytime meals. San Marzano, for example, lists brunch at $34 per guest and dinner at $58 per guest, both plus tax and 20% gratuity. Deity NYC lists Monday through Thursday events at $275 per person with a 75-person minimum, while its Saturday price is $325 per person with a 100-person minimum. Prices vary by business and by date, so a weekday is not automatically cheaper until you have the full quote in hand.

Vendor coverage is the last lever. Two hours of photography costs less than six, but shorter coverage may leave out getting ready, parts of the reception, albums, a second shooter or travel. Ask exactly what the hours include.

City Clerk, park, restaurant or private venue

Each of these four routes answers a different question, so choose by what you want the day to feel like and who needs to be there.

City Clerk. This is the lowest-cost legal route. The City Clerk provides civil ceremonies by appointment, and you schedule through Project Cupid. Pair it with a meal afterward at a restaurant and the whole day can stay small.

Park. A park ceremony is not free of paperwork. NYC Parks requires a special-event permit for events with more than 20 attendees and charges a $25 processing fee. Additional sound, tent or signage fees may apply, and the permit application should go in at least 21 days ahead. With 20 or fewer attendees, ask NYC Parks whether your plan still needs one.

Restaurant. A restaurant can hold ceremony-adjacent dinners or brunches with food, service and a room in one price. Ask whether tax, gratuity and any room minimum are on top.

Private venue. A private space gives you more control over timing and guests, and it also brings the most line items, from rentals to staffing to insurance. Get every one of them in writing.

What NYC venues publish

The examples below come from each business's own pages, read October 5, 2026, and prices can change. They show how differently venues structure a price, which matters more than any single number.

  • Bat Haus, Williamsburg. The Essential package starts at $1,350 for five hours and up to 50 guests. It includes tables, chairs, sound, lighting, setup, cleanup and an on-site host. Food and drinks are bring-your-own, and the rental is a flat fee with no corkage fee or catering markup.
  • Deity NYC, Brooklyn. Six-hour events run $275 per person Monday through Thursday with a 75-person minimum. January through April Sundays are $275 per person with an 80-person minimum, and Saturday is $325 per person with a 100-person minimum. Deity NYC says it does not charge administration, staff or rental fees and adds New York State sales tax.
  • Fitzpatrick Hotels, Manhattan. Selected event spaces start from $2,500 and a penthouse from $3,500. Capacities and inclusions differ by space.
  • San Marzano. Brunch is $34 per guest and dinner is $58, each plus tax and 20% gratuity. The brunch price includes bottomless mimosas and drip coffee.

Notice what each one asks of you: a flat fee with outside food, a per-person price with a guest minimum, a starting price that depends on the space, and a prix fixe plus extras. Your guest list decides which structure costs less.

Photography and flowers

Photographers publish short packages that suit a City Clerk ceremony or a small wedding. Prices below were read October 5, 2026.

Two men with light olive skin in a charcoal suit and a tan linen suit holding a single bouquet of white ranunculus on a quiet side street corner while a photographer crouches nearby, plane trees and a brick wall behind
  • Tals Studio lists a two-hour City Hall wedding photography package at $499.
  • Yana Love Photography lists a two-hour intimate package starting at $600, for City Hall, elopements and intimate weddings under 15 guests.
  • Photos by Priya lists a two-hour micro-wedding package at $1,100 and a four-hour package at $1,700.

For flowers, a bouquet alone can stand in for reception arrangements. Citywide Flower Plants lists a classic white bridal bouquet from $185, a rose centerpiece from $145 and an orchid ceremony arrangement from $195. Treat those as starting prices to recheck with the florist before you plan around them.

Ask each photographer about travel, overtime, a second shooter and albums. Ask each florist about delivery and breakdown.

The extra charges to ask about

The price on a venue's page is rarely the amount on the final invoice. Ask about each of these before you sign:

  • Sales tax
  • Service or administrative charges
  • Gratuity, and whether it is calculated before or after tax
  • Food and beverage minimums
  • Guest-count minimums
  • Corkage or outside-catering fees
  • Cake-cutting fees
  • Rentals for tables, chairs, linens, glassware, sound and lighting
  • Setup, cleanup and staffing
  • Delivery and breakdown
  • Overtime
  • Event insurance
  • Park processing fees and any additional permit charges
  • Photographer travel, overtime, second shooter and album costs
  • Transportation, parking and rides for guests

Compare the businesses above and you can see why the question matters. Bat Haus publishes a flat structure with no corkage fee or catering markup. Deity NYC adds New York State sales tax. San Marzano adds tax and 20% gratuity to every prix fixe price.

How to build a budget before you book

Start with the fixed legal costs, add one sourced quote for each celebration line, and total the result before tax and transportation. The table below is a component example built from the published prices above for a 20-guest brunch, not a complete wedding quote.

That subtotal does not yet include sales tax, transportation, attire, music, cake, invitations or any permit or other vendor charges, so add a line for each. If you hold a venue like Bat Haus and a brunch at a restaurant on the same day, confirm that the two plans fit together, since the venue package is bring-your-own and the restaurant brunch is its own meal.

Questions to ask every venue and vendor:

  • What is the final total after tax, gratuity and service charges?
  • What exactly is included, and what costs extra?
  • Is there a minimum spend or a minimum guest count?
  • What are the cancellation terms and the payment schedule?
  • What happens if the event runs over?
  • Is my date and guest count available?

Booking checklist, in order:

  1. Submit the online marriage-license application and keep the confirmation number.
  2. Schedule your in-person or virtual appointment.
  3. Bring valid identification and payment, and pay the $35 license fee.
  4. Observe the 24-hour waiting period unless a judge grants a waiver.
  5. Choose your date, venue and food plan, and get each quote in writing.
  6. For a park event over 20 people, apply for the NYC Parks permit at least 21 days ahead.
  7. Book your photographer, flowers, attire and transportation.
  8. Hold the ceremony, then make sure the officiant, you and your partner, and your witnesses sign the license and that the officiant returns it within five business days.
  9. Order additional domestic-use or extended records if you need them.

A document folder or expanding file organizer is a practical purchase for keeping identification, appointment confirmations, quotes and certificates together. Look for a secure closure and water resistance if you will carry papers between outdoor and indoor locations. A garment bag with enough length and wrinkle protection helps if you are moving attire across the city.
