# Updating Your New York Driver License and Car Registration After Marriage

![A woman with dark skin and a man with light tan skin and South Asian features sit side by side on a sofa looking at a laptop angled away from the camera, a closed envelope and car keys on the cushion between them, one tapping a pen](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-update-drivers-license-after-marriage-ny/driver-license-name-change-planning-for-couples-in-a-sunlit-nyc-apartment.jpg)

If you are taking a new last name, the order matters more than anything else: update your name with [Social Security](https://www.ssa.gov/life-events/change-name) first, because the DMV needs the new name to match your Social Security record. Get a government-issued marriage certificate from the [NYC City Clerk](https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/content/marriage-records), then use the DMV's name-change form, [MV-44NC](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv44nc.pdf), if you hold a standard license, learner permit or non-driver ID. Your [vehicle registration](https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/proof-requirements-for-new-york-state-vehicle-registrations-or-title-certificates) and title are separate transactions, and your auto insurer should hear about the changes too; the [NYS Department of Financial Services](https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/auto_insurance) explains what to report.

## Key takeaways

- Social Security comes first. The DMV rejects a name-change application if the Social Security record still shows the old name.
- Bring a government-issued marriage certificate, not the marriage license.
- MV-44NC covers a standard license, permit or non-driver ID. REAL ID, Enhanced and CDL credentials follow a different route.
- Changing your license does not change your registration or title. Those are separate steps.
- Adding a spouse as a vehicle owner is a different task from correcting a name.
- Tell your auto insurer about any change to your name, address, drivers or vehicles.

## The order in one view

Think of this as five short steps, each one depending on the one before.

1. Order a certified marriage record.
2. Update your name with Social Security and wait for the new card.
3. Change the name on your license, permit or non-driver ID.
4. Change the name on your registration, and on your title if you need a new one.
5. Call your auto insurer.

Skipping ahead is what costs people a second trip. The DMV's form says the name on your new Social Security card must exactly match the name you request, and that it will reject the application if your name has not been changed with Social Security. Keep that one rule in mind and the rest falls into place.

### The five steps in order

1. Order a certified marriage record

The DMV lists a government-issued marriage certificate as proof of a name change; the license is not the one to bring.

2. Update Social Security

Request the name change and wait for the new card, which is mailed 5 to 10 business days after your request is completed.

3. Change your license, permit or non-driver ID

Use MV-44NC; the name on your new Social Security card must exactly match the name you request.

4. Change your registration, and your title if needed

The registration uses MV-82, and the title is a separate transaction.

5. Call your auto insurer

Tell them about your new name, address, drivers or vehicles.

A name change is also a choice. Nothing here requires you to change anything; if you keep your name, your records stay as they are. If you are changing it, the steps below apply whether you are taking a partner's surname, hyphenating or combining names.

## The paper that proves your marriage

The DMV lists a government-issued marriage certificate as acceptable proof of a name change. A marriage license is the document you get before the ceremony, so it is not the one to bring. What you want is the marriage record issued afterward.

For domestic use, the [NYC City Clerk](https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/content/fees) charges $15 for the first short-form copy and $10 for each additional copy. Order a few if you are also updating a passport, bank accounts and other records, since each agency may keep what you hand over. The City Clerk says records from 1950 to the present can be requested by scheduling an in-person appointment at the Manhattan office through NYC Cupid, or by mail. The [mail-in request form](https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/assets/cityclerk/downloads/pdf/mail_in_request_form%20final.pdf) asks for identification, a signed request, and payment by U.S. postal money order, or by money order or certified check drawn on a U.S. bank.

The short domestic copy is the right one for most DMV purposes. The extended certificate for foreign use costs $35 for the first copy and $30 for each additional copy, and you only need it if another country's agency asks for it. If you prefer to be helped in Spanish when you order, ask the City Clerk what assistance is available before you go. For more on certificates, see [Getting Your NYC Marriage Certificate, the Extended Copy and the Apostille](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/nyc-marriage-certificate-apostille/).

## Social Security first

Social Security mails the replacement card 5 to 10 business days after your request is completed, according to its [change-name page](https://www.ssa.gov/life-events/change-name). In an [August 2024 notice](https://www.ssa.gov/news/en/advocates/2024-08-08.html), SSA advised waiting at least 30 days after the marriage before requesting the card, so the state has time to update its records. That 30 days is SSA's guidance for the card request; it is not a DMV deadline.

![A person seen from the side at a small desk by a hallway window, a laptop with its screen turned away, a closed folder and a pen beside it, and a coat hanging on a hook behind](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-update-drivers-license-after-marriage-ny/social-security-name-change-home-desk-setup-in-nyc.jpg)

The same notice says people who married in one of 21 participating states may be able to finish the process online, and that eligibility depends on your circumstances. Start on SSA's [name-change page](https://www.ssa.gov/life-events/change-name) to see which route applies to you. The Spanish-language version is the [SSA page in Spanish](https://www.ssa.gov/es/eventos-de-la-vida/change-name).

Your Social Security number does not change; only the name on the record does. The wider list of what else to update, from passports to bank accounts, is covered in [Changing Your Name After Marrying in NYC](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/name-change-after-marriage-nyc/), so this page stays with the car and the license.

## Your license, permit or non-driver ID

For an existing standard license, learner permit or non-driver ID, the form is [MV-44NC](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv44nc.pdf), for name changes only. The Spanish version is [MV-44NCS](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv44ncs.pdf). It asks for:

- The completed form, with your full signature kept inside the signature box.
- Your current New York license, permit or photo ID.
- A copy of your Social Security card showing the new name, if you are mailing the form.
- A Social Security number already on file with the DMV.
- Proof of the name change. For marriage, that is a government-issued marriage certificate.
- The DMV fee.

You can mail the form with payment by personal check or money order to NYS DMV, Utica Processing Center, 207 Genesee Street, 15th Floor, Utica, NY 13501. The form itself does not print the fee, so check the DMV's [fees page](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/fees-refunds) for the amount before you write the check.

## If you hold a REAL ID, Enhanced license or CDL

MV-44NC does not apply to these credentials. The DMV's [Enhanced or REAL ID page](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/enhanced-or-real-id?page=469) points you to its interactive pre-screening tool, which tells you which forms and documents you need.

![A motor vehicle office waiting area with rows of blue chairs, a ticket display turned away, and a person seen from behind waiting with a closed folder on their lap under fluorescent light](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-update-drivers-license-after-marriage-ny/motor-vehicle-office-waiting-area-for-new-york-license-updates.jpg)

Plan on bringing proof of your full legal name and proof of each name change, if there has been more than one. You also need two proofs of New York State residency, generally issued within the last 365 days. A document showing only a P.O. Box will not work as residency proof, and the DMV may print only your legal name on the credential, so a nickname or shortened name can require extra proof.

A REAL ID carries no additional fee, though the normal transaction fees apply. An Enhanced license or Enhanced non-driver ID has an additional $30 fee. If your name change comes around the same time as a renewal, the DMV allows an earlier renewal for converting to a REAL ID or Enhanced credential when your current one is valid, was issued more than six months ago, and does not expire within the next 12 months.

## Your vehicle registration is its own step

Changing the name on your license does not change your registration. The DMV says registration, title and other DMV documents must be changed separately.

For the registration, use [MV-82](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv82.pdf), the Vehicle Registration/Title Application. It has fields for the primary registrant, a co-registrant, a name change and former name, owner and co-owner details, address, vehicle identification number, signatures and proof of identity. The instructions are in [MV-82.1](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv821.pdf).

The DMV's [proof requirements](https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/proof-requirements-for-new-york-state-vehicle-registrations-or-title-certificates) ask you to prove your date of birth and to provide documents totaling six points of proof of name. Documents generally need to be originals or certified by the issuing agency, and a U.S. marriage or divorce record counts as a two-point document. That is one more reason to order your certified marriage record early.

## The title, and adding a spouse as an owner

A title is the ownership document, and it moves on its own track. Two different jobs hide under this heading, and it helps to know which one you have.

![A person seen from behind beside a parked grey sedan on a quiet Queens street, one hand on the roof and a closed folder under the other arm, a fieldstone wall and a tree behind](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-update-drivers-license-after-marriage-ny/car-title-name-change-paperwork-on-a-quiet-queens-street.jpg)

**Correcting your name on a title.** If your former name is on both the title and the registration, and you want a duplicate title in your new name, the DMV's [CR-78 instructions](https://dmv.ny.gov/document/cr-78) say to change the name on your license and registration first. Then bring the application for a duplicate title, MV-902, and the original marriage certificate or other name-change proof, to a DMV office. If the vehicle is not registered, mail the application and a photocopy of the marriage certificate to the Title Bureau. The Spanish form is [MV-902S](https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv902s.pdf). If a lender holds the title, the DMV's [lienholder page](https://dmv.ny.gov/titles/add-or-remove-a-lienholder) covers the duplicate-title and lien-release steps.

**Adding or removing a spouse as an owner.** This changes who owns the car, so it is more than a name correction. The application has to identify the owner or co-owner, carry the required signatures and include proof of identity. The fee depends on the transaction, the vehicle, the registration, the title, the plates, taxes and whether ownership is being transferred, so confirm it with the DMV before you file.

## What to tell your auto insurer

The [NYS Department of Financial Services](https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/auto_insurance) tells policyholders to notify their insurer about changes while the policy is in force, such as a new address or an added or removed vehicle or driver. After a wedding, that can mean:

- Your new legal name.
- A new address.
- A driver or vehicle being added or removed.
- A change in who drives the car, or how it is used.
- Whether you will combine policies or keep them separate.
- Adding your spouse as a named insured or permitted driver, if that suits you.

Marriage does not by itself change your policy or premium, and the DFS says insurers may not refuse or end coverage because of marital status. Ask your insurer what documents it wants, and ask for updated policy papers after any change.

## What it costs and how long it takes

What it costs and how long it takes

| Item | Figure | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| NYC domestic short marriage record, first copy | $15 | NYC City Clerk |
| NYC domestic short marriage record, each additional copy | $10 | NYC City Clerk |
| NYC Extended Certificate for Foreign Use, first copy | $35 | NYC City Clerk |
| NYC Extended Certificate for Foreign Use, each additional copy | $30 | NYC City Clerk |
| Social Security replacement card, mailing time | 5 to 10 business days | SSA |
| Social Security suggested wait after marriage | At least 30 days | SSA |
| REAL ID, additional fee | $0 | NYS DMV |
| Enhanced credential, additional fee | $30 | NYS DMV |
| Duplicate title | $20 | NYS DMV |
| Standard title certificate | $50 | NYS DMV |

The $50 title certificate fee is the standard figure for a vehicle, trailer or vessel, and it is not necessarily what your name-change or ownership transaction will cost. The license name-change fee, and the fees for your registration, vary by transaction, so read the current amount on the DMV's [fees page](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/fees-refunds) right before you file.

### Your documents and sequence checklist

- Certified marriage record in hand.
- Social Security name change requested, and the new card received.
- Current license, permit or non-driver ID.
- Copy of the new Social Security card.
- Marriage certificate or other proof of the name change.
- DMV fee ready (check or money order if you are mailing MV-44NC).
- Registration changed on MV-82.
- Title changed or duplicated, only if you need it.
- Spouse added or removed as an owner, only if ownership is changing.
- Auto insurer told.
- Address updated separately, if you moved.

A letter-size expanding folder with labeled compartments and a secure closure keeps the originals, copies, receipts and new cards together; water-resistant material helps if you are carrying them across town.

## Questions about the license and car after marriage

These are the questions that come up most once the paperwork starts.

### What comes first, Social Security or the DMV?

Social Security. The DMV says the name on your new Social Security card must exactly match the name you ask for on the DMV document, and it rejects the application otherwise.

### Can I use my marriage license at the DMV?

Bring the marriage certificate, the record issued after the ceremony. The DMV's name-change form lists a government-issued marriage certificate as the proof, and the license is the paper you get before the wedding.

### Does changing my license also change my registration and title?

No. The DMV says those records are changed separately, using MV-82 for the registration and the title process for the title. If your former name is still on the title, change the license and registration first.

### Is there a special fee for a REAL ID or an Enhanced license?

A REAL ID has no additional fee beyond the normal transaction fees. An Enhanced license or non-driver ID has an additional $30 fee.

### Do I need to add my spouse to the title?

Only if you want to change ownership. A name change and adding a co-owner are separate vehicle-record actions, and the second one needs signatures and proof of identity for the owner or co-owner.

## Your next step

Order your certified marriage record from the [NYC City Clerk](https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/content/marriage-records) today, then set a reminder for 30 days after the wedding to start your Social Security request. Once the new card arrives, you can send in your license form or start your registration, and you will have everything the DMV asks for in one go. Before you file anything, confirm the current fee on the DMV's [fees page](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/fees-refunds).
