# Getting Married in Central Park

![A woman in a lace dress and a man in a linen suit, one with warm tan skin and one with dark brown skin, standing under a flowering tree on a wide curving park path of hexagonal pavers with an officiant seen from three-quarter back and two guests, tall old elms and a green slatted bench](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-central-park-wedding/park-path-wedding-ceremony-under-a-flowering-tree-with-an-officiant-in-nyc.jpg)

A Central Park wedding can be a legal ceremony, a symbolic ceremony or a photo session, and each one has its own paperwork. For a legal marriage you need a New York marriage license and an authorized officiant. For most ceremonies with more than 20 attendees, you apply for a permit through [NYC Parks](https://nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/parks/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/parks/Home.aspx), and the Conservatory Garden uses a separate permit from the [Central Park Conservancy](https://www.centralparknyc.org/activities/guides/weddings). NYC Parks lists guest limits from about 20 to 100 people depending on the spot. Chairs, decorations, [amplified sound](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/nyc-wedding-sound-permit-amplified-music/), alcohol and petals are restricted, so the details below will save you a few surprises.

## Key takeaways

- A park permit reserves space; it does not make you married. The license comes from the NYC City Clerk.
- NYC Parks asks for a permit when more than 20 people attend, with a $25 non-refundable fee and a 21-day minimum.
- The Conservatory Garden has its own Conservancy permit, a 90-minute window and no receptions.
- Guest limits run from about 20 to 100, depending on the location.
- Plan to bring no chairs, balloons, flowers, petals or amplified music.
- Events go ahead rain or shine, so settle a rain plan early.

## What makes the marriage legal

Start here, because the park has no say in this part. The marriage license comes from the NYC City Clerk. [NYC311](https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02115) lists the license fee at $35, and the license is valid for 60 days. There is a 24-hour wait between the day the license is issued and the day you can marry. You also need an authorized officiant and a witness at the ceremony, and the officiant files the signed license afterward.

The [New York State Department of Health](https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/4210/) publishes the statewide rules. If you would like to read the application in Spanish, the City Clerk offers a [Spanish translation of the marriage-license application](https://www.nyc.gov/portal/apps/cityclerk/cityclerkformsonline/translations/spanish/mar_lic_reg.pdf); the official procedures and fees are on the English pages, so confirm current Spanish-language help through NYC311 or the City Clerk. The full steps are in our guide to the [NYC marriage license](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/nyc-marriage-license/), and the officiant options are in our guide to [who can officiate a wedding in NYC](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/who-can-officiate-a-wedding-in-nyc/).

A symbolic ceremony or a vow renewal in the park may not create a legal marriage by itself, so many couples sign their license at City Hall or with an officiant and use the park for the celebration.

## Do you need a Central Park permit?

If more than 20 people will attend, yes. The [NYC Parks permit portal](https://nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/parks/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/parks/Home.aspx) says a special-event permit is required above that number. The processing fee is $25 and it is non-refundable. NYC Parks will not accept an application fewer than 21 days before the event, and an older NYC Parks wedding PDF gives 30 days for processing, so apply as early as you can and confirm the current minimum with NYC Parks before you submit. Sound, tents and signage can add fees.

Even for a smaller group, a permit can help you protect your spot and learn about park work on your date. You apply through the NYC Parks special-event system, and you may need to create an account. Applications for the next calendar year open on the first Tuesday after Labor Day in September. Our guide to [getting a park ceremony permit in NYC](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/park-wedding-permits-nyc/) walks through the application itself.

## Does the Conservatory Garden use a different permit?

Yes. The Conservatory Garden is run by the Central Park Conservancy, so you apply to the Conservancy rather than NYC Parks, and a permit is required for any wedding there, whatever the size. The [Conservancy's wedding page](https://www.centralparknyc.org/activities/guides/weddings) says applications are due at least 10 days ahead, and the permit is built around 90 minutes for the ceremony and photography together.

![A park staff member in a plain green jacket seen from behind walking a gravel path between beds of red and yellow tulips toward a wisteria-covered pergola in a formal park garden, a few visitors far away and an open wrought-iron gate at the end](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-central-park-wedding/formal-park-garden-path-with-tulip-beds-and-a-wisteria-pergola-in-nyc.jpg)

Three things shape the plan. The garden stays open to the public during your ceremony, so visitors may be asked to give you room but the space is not private. Wedding receptions are not permitted there, as the [Conservancy's wedding FAQs](https://www.centralparknyc.org/wedding-faqs) explain. And fees need a quick check: an older [Conservancy permit application](https://assets.centralparknyc.org/pdfs/forms-and-applications/Wedding_Permit_Application.pdf) lists $400 for a ceremony and $100 for photography, so confirm the current amounts with the Conservancy before you budget.

## Which Central Park locations are available?

NYC Parks' [wedding guide](https://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/attractions/images/weddings_in_central_park.pdf) suggests these spots and gives a limit for each. They are examples of what is available, so match them to your own guest list.

Published guest limits for Central Park wedding spots

| Location | Published limit or note |
| --- | --- |
| Cop Cot | Maximum 50 people |
| Ladies Pavilion | About 20 to 25 people |
| Wagner Cove | About 20 to 25 people |
| Cherry Hill | Maximum 100 people |
| Harlem Meer | Maximum 100 people |
| Shakespeare Garden | About 20 to 25 people |
| Bethesda Terrace and Bethesda Fountain | 25 people |
| Cedar Hill | Maximum 50 people |
| Great Hill | Maximum 100 people |
| Gapstow Bridge | About 20 to 25 people |
| Belvedere Plaza | About 20 to 25 people; no access to the castle |
| Bow Bridge | About 20 to 25 people |
| Pool Lawn | Maximum 80 people |
| Summit Rock | Maximum 80 people |

The Conservatory Garden is handled separately by the Conservancy, as described above.

## How do you choose a spot?

Begin with your guest count, because it removes options fast. A group of 20 to 25 fits the bridges, Ladies Pavilion, Wagner Cove, Shakespeare Garden and Bethesda Terrace. Up to 50 opens Cop Cot and Cedar Hill, up to 80 adds Pool Lawn and Summit Rock, and Cherry Hill, Harlem Meer and Great Hill hold up to 100.

![A quiet wooded park path in October covered in leaves over hexagonal pavers, a green slatted bench, a black iron lamppost and low sun through orange maples, a lone jogger far off and out of focus](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-central-park-wedding/quiet-autumn-park-path-with-a-green-bench-and-iron-lamppost-in-nyc.jpg)

After that, think about what the two of you want to see and how guests will get there. The Conservancy calls Bethesda Terrace one of the park's most iconic features and describes the Conservatory Garden as a favorite for intimate weddings, proposals and photography. The garden has rotating floral displays from early spring through late October, and winter's bare trees open up skyline views from places such as Great Hill and Summit Rock. Ask NYC Parks or the Conservancy about closures and other events on your date, since popular areas can be busy.

Walking distance and restrooms matter more than most couples expect, especially with older guests. The [Conservancy's restroom guide](https://www.centralparknyc.org/restrooms) lists these:

- Conservatory Garden: open 8:00 AM to dusk daily, wheelchair accessible.
- Bethesda Terrace: open 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily from late March through early November, not wheelchair accessible.
- The Ramble: open 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily year-round, not wheelchair accessible.
- Central Park Boathouse: open 7:30 AM to dusk daily year-round, not wheelchair accessible.
- Tavern on the Green: open 7:00 AM to dusk daily from late March through early November, wheelchair accessible.
- West 61st Street public restroom and Heckscher Playground: open 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily, both wheelchair accessible.

Hours can change. For step-free access, the Conservancy says the Conservatory Garden can be entered with an assistive device through the North Gate at 106th Street, west of Fifth Avenue, and each garden can be reached by wheelchair, though some areas of the North and Central Gardens are reachable only by stairs. For any other location, ask the park office about the route and terrain before you choose.

Finally, decide where you will go afterward. If the reception is at a restaurant in the park, a spot near it keeps the walk short.

## What can you bring?

Less than you might think. For general Central Park weddings, NYC Parks' wedding guide says:

- No set-up of tents, tables or chairs.
- A chuppah may be hand-carried in and out with prior permission.
- Acoustic music is fine, and amplified sound is not.
- No flowers, balloons or decorations, and no banners or signs attached to park property or trees.
- No staking into the ground.
- No alcohol.
- No vehicles or pedicab drop-off.
- The public keeps access, and you clean up after yourselves.

The Conservatory Garden's rules, from the Conservancy's permit application, are similar and a little more specific. Chairs, tents, tables, podiums, rugs and runners are out, though you can ask for one or two folding chairs if there is a special circumstance. Floral pieces, balloons, signs, ribbons, ropes and banners are out. Amplified music and audio equipment are not allowed, while acoustic string instruments are. Rice, birdseed, flowers, petals and confetti are prohibited, and bubbles are allowed. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted.

In practice, that points you toward what fits in your hands: rings, vows, a [compact umbrella](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/go/compact-umbrella/) and a camera. A [waterproof folder](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/go/document-folder/) for your license, permit and vendor contracts is worth having, and a pair of flat backup shoes helps on uneven paths.

### What to carry to the ceremony

- Rings and vows
- A compact umbrella
- A camera
- A waterproof folder for your license, permit and vendor contracts
- A pair of flat backup shoes for uneven paths

## Can a photographer work there?

Yes, within limits. The [Conservancy's film and photo page](https://www.centralparknyc.org/activities/guides/film-photo) says handheld and tripod photography generally does not need a permit. Commercial photography and professional or staged sessions can need approval, and equipment beyond handheld gear, such as lighting, large props or tripods for commercial shoots, may need a different approval route. In the Conservatory Garden, professional or staged photography requires a photography permit.

![A wedding photographer seen from behind crouched with the camera raised photographing a woman in a red dress and a man in a black suit, both with fair skin, standing on a dark rock outcrop beside a woodland path with autumn leaves behind them, a passing visitor far away](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-central-park-wedding/wedding-photographer-photographing-a-couple-on-a-park-rock-outcrop-in-nyc.jpg)

If you hire a photographer, ask early whether your session counts as commercial and who handles any request. Our guides to [engagement photos](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/engagement-photos-nyc/), [the best City Hall photo spots](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/city-hall-wedding-photo-spots/) and [what a wedding photographer costs in New York City](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/wedding-photographer-cost-nyc/) cover the rest.

## Where can you hold the reception?

Not in the Conservatory Garden, and not in the open park, since NYC Parks does not allow set-up, alcohol or amplified sound. Two venues inside Central Park host weddings, shown here as examples.

The [Central Park Boathouse](https://centralparkboathouse.com/event-spaces/) has a Lake Room for up to 200 seated guests or 350 at a reception, and a Fireside Room for up to 50. Ceremonies can be held inside the Lake Room and followed by the reception in the same space. Food and beverage come only from the venue, a signed contract and deposit are required, and [outside vendors](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/outside-vendor-rules-nyc-wedding-venues/) may be allowed with approval and certificates of insurance. Shuttle transportation is included for Lake Room events.

[Tavern on the Green](https://www.tavernonthegreen.com/private-events-venue/weddings/) hosts ceremonies and receptions in Central Park. Contact its events team for a site tour and ask for a written proposal with pricing for your date.

## What does it cost, and what if it rains?

The easiest way to budget is to sort costs by who collects them.

What a Central Park wedding costs, and who collects each fee

| Cost | Amount | Who collects it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Marriage license | $35 | NYC City Clerk, per [NYC311](https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02115) |
| Special-event permit | $25, non-refundable; sound, tents and signage can add fees | NYC Parks |
| Conservatory Garden ceremony and photography | An older application lists $400 and $100; confirm current fees | Central Park Conservancy |
| Boathouse venue fee | $10,000 | Central Park Boathouse |
| Boathouse on-site ceremony enhancement | $3,000 | Central Park Boathouse |
| Boathouse premium bar | $400 | Central Park Boathouse |
| Boathouse ultra-premium bar | $450 | Central Park Boathouse |
| Tavern on the Green | Written proposal on request | Tavern on the Green |

The Boathouse's [wedding pricing PDF](https://centralparkboathouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/CPBH-Weddings.pdf) also lists 8.875% New York State sales tax, [a 12% administrative fee and a 12% service charge](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/nyc-wedding-venue-service-charge-tax-gratuity/), with five hours of service and the catering fee listed separately. Officiant, photographer, transportation and a cushion for surprises come on top, and each of those is set by the person you hire.

![An event crew member in a rain jacket seen from behind wiping the top of a round table set under a plain open-sided white tent on a wet park lawn after rain, puddles reflecting a grey sky and dripping trees](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/images/guide-central-park-wedding/event-crew-wiping-a-table-under-a-white-tent-after-rain-in-a-nyc-park.jpg)

On weather, the Conservancy says Central Park events take place rain or shine and rain does not earn a refund. Decide on a backup before you book: an indoor space such as the Boathouse's Lake Room, or a flexible date for photos. Ask each venue and each permit office for its cancellation terms in writing. Our guide to [a rain plan for an NYC wedding](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/guides/nyc-wedding-rain-plan/) covers the options in more depth.

## Questions about Central Park weddings

A few answers that couples often want in one place.

### Does a park permit make the marriage legal?

No. A permit covers use of the space. Your marriage is legal through the New York license, an authorized officiant and a witness, as described at the top of this page.

### Can you bring a wedding arch?

NYC Parks does not allow set-up in general, and a chuppah may be hand-carried in and out with prior permission. Ask NYC Parks about anything freestanding before you plan around it.

### Do you need a permit for a very small ceremony?

NYC Parks requires one above 20 attendees. For fewer, a permit is optional but can protect your location, while the Conservatory Garden needs a Conservancy permit for any wedding.

### Where do guests find an accessible restroom?

The Conservatory Garden, Tavern on the Green, the West 61st Street public restroom and Heckscher Playground are listed as wheelchair accessible. Bethesda Terrace, the Ramble and the Boathouse are not.

## Your next step

Pick your guest count, then pick a spot from the table, and decide whether your location needs an NYC Parks or Conservancy permit. Book your license appointment alongside it, since the license and the permit are two separate to-dos. From there, read our guides to the NYC marriage license, getting a park ceremony permit in NYC, the best City Hall photo spots, and the [vendor directory](https://getmarriedinnyc.com/vendors/) for officiants, photographers and florists who know the park.
